Lourensford Wine Estate - Somerset West, Cape Town

Lourensford Wine Estate is a magnificent estate nestled in the fertile bowl of the Helderberg Mountains near Somerset West. Originally founded in 1709 as part of Willem Adriaan van der Stel's farm, Vergelegen, is arguably one of the most beautiful wine estates in the world. Lourensford has combined a proud history with a dynamic new vision in order to create what can only be described as a giant among South African wine producers. The proud winemaking traditions of this estate were revived in 1998 when it was purchased by Dr. Christo Wiese. Its expanse on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain has been researched and the findings indicate that up to five hundred hectares of the best cultivars can be planted. The estate also boasts a state of the art wine cellar which utilises technology unique in the Southern Hemisphere, and already presses more than 1500 tons of grapes.

The Wine Tasting Centre is well stocked with all the current vintages which can be sampled with with a lovely cheese platter or for the sweet tooth, indulge in a chocolate tasting with hand-made Chocolates by Tomes and little shot glasses filled with honey liqueur. In this tasting centre there truly is definitely something to satisfy all the senses.

Apart from its wine producing there is far more to Lourensford Wine Estate. The Estate hectares consist of various fruit orchards including apples, pears and plums all of which are packed at their own packshed. There are also over 900 hectares of pine plantations which are also milled on the farm. An exclusive fly-fishing club is stocked by trout on the farm and their cheesery is producing some of the finest farmhouse cheeses in the Cape.

Not only does the beautiful farm play host to many local and international film shoots, it is also a premium destination for annual sports and cultural events as well as wedding receptions and corporate functions which can also be held on the estate. The sport of kings, polo, is practiced and enjoyed at the large equestrian centre which has one of only two polo fields in Cape Town.
