Eikendal Vinyards near Raithby is a mere 40 minute drive from the Cape Town city centre, or 15 minutes from Stellenbosch on the R44 route between the historic university town of Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Whatever your trip plans are for this area, this is a definite must see. With its barrel-vaulted cellar buildings and its towering water fountain Eikendal is a real landmark in the Helderberg mountain area. Eikendal is one of the vineyards in the "Golden Triangle" of wine growing, and this ensures that its vineyards flourish in the mountain and maritime microclimate, which is ideal for the production of quality wine.
Sometimes the potential of an area can be so great that it can cause a family to change their lives completely in order to harness that potential, and this was the case with the Saager family. In 1981, the Saager family from Zurich, Switzerland identified the wine making potential of the Helderberg mountain area and wasted no time in modernising the existing vineyards and establishing the cellar and since then the Eikendal Vinyards have been under their ownership. There are many environmental factors which contribute to the ideal conditions for growing noble varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, one of the main factors being the moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean, which results in cool afternoons and evenings that are ideal for growing quality grapes.
There is more to just tasting wine at Eikendal, you can also enjoy an al fresco lunch at the restaurant, some fly fishing, and vineyard walks.
