Bethelsdorp

Eastern Cape Bethelsdorp, in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape, lies just outside Port Elizabeth, and is one of the first mission stations in the Eastern Cape, making this little village of great historical value. Bethelsdorp was established in 1803 by two men, Van der Kemp and Read from the London Missionary Society, who defended the resident Khoikhoi against the Eastern Cape colonial government that thrived on their labour, but lacked the willingness to pay a fair wage.
Back then, Eastern Cape Bethelsdorp was a dusty Cape settlement described by travellers as a gloomy collection of huts with a small, thatched clay hut in the middle acting as a church. The existing Eastern Cape Van Der Kemp Memorial Church, thought to be the first congregational church in southern Africa, still houses Van der Kemp’s original Dutch Bible, believed to be the oldest in South Africa, and is protected by the National Monuments Act. This Eastern Cape heritage site sits on the Bethelsdorp market square, where the original mission bell still rests, and fronts Livingstone Cottage, where David Livingstone himself occasionally stayed. Today, Bethelsdorp is a vibrant suburb of Port Elizabeth, where many of the Van der Kemp descendants still live.
While in PE Bethelsdorp, 'take a hike' on the Van der Kemp's Kloof hiking trail that starts in Bethelsdorp, and proceeds up the kloof into the wilderness, returning along the plateau through botanically interesting grassy Fynbos, with magnificent Eastern Cape views across the Swartkops Valley and Algoa Bay.
