Boggoms Bay

Boggomsbaai is situated close to Mossel Bay, on the N2 national road, on the famous Garden Route. No one is really sure where Boggomsbaai got its name from but its most likely the "boggom" or the bark of the baboons in the area.

Boggomsbaai has tennis and golf facilities, so it should appeal to the sportier visitor. You can hike along the beach and look for the elusive "pansy" shell.

Fishing is good in the area and fishermen are likely to catch elf, kob and leervis in the autumn and winter months. Hikers can walk along the coast to Vleesbaai or Dana bay. While hiking you may spot some Cape pheasant, steenbok, or bushbuck.

Boggomsbaai has some self-catering chalets available but these fill up quickly during the holiday season from December to January, so it is advisable to book early.

The weather in the Boggomsbaai area is temperate with an average winter temperature of around 23 degrees celcius and in summer it averages 25 degrees.

Boggoms Bay, nestled along the Garden Route in the Western Cape of South Africa, offers visitors a tranquil coastal retreat with stunning natural beauty.

Here are three things to see or do in and around Boggoms Bay:

  1. Boggomsbaai Beach: The pristine Boggomsbaai Beach is the main attraction in the area. With its unspoiled coastline, golden sands, and crystal-clear waters, it's an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and leisurely strolls. The beach is relatively secluded, offering visitors a serene and peaceful environment to relax and unwind while taking in breathtaking ocean views.

  2. Bird Watching at Groot Punt: Just a short distance from Boggoms Bay lies Groot Punt, a rugged headland and nature reserve. Groot Punt is a haven for birdwatchers, offering opportunities to spot a variety of coastal and migratory bird species, including cormorants, gannets, terns, and oystercatchers. Visitors can explore the reserve's walking trails and lookout points while enjoying the scenic beauty of the coastline and observing the rich birdlife.

  3. Whale Watching in Season: Boggoms Bay is situated along the migration route of southern right whales, making it an excellent destination for whale watching during the winter and spring months (June to November). Visitors can often spot these magnificent creatures breaching and playing in the waters just offshore. Whale watching excursions are available in nearby towns such as Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, offering the opportunity for up-close encounters with these gentle giants.

Whether you're seeking relaxation on the beach, birdwatching adventures, or the thrill of spotting whales in their natural habitat, Boggoms Bay and its surroundings offer a wealth of natural attractions and outdoor experiences along the picturesque Garden Route of South Africa's Western Cape.
