The Heathfield railway station is on the main line from Cape Town to Simons Town and the Main Road, which runs from Central Cape Town through to Simons Town, runs along the west of Heathfield. Although the suburb is not a tourist hub, it is well known because of its beautiful lake, Princess Vlei. The suburb of Heathfield was created and affected by the apartheid regime, including the design of the town in which only two entrances were created to blockade it in the event of an uprising.

The massive expanse of water called Princess Vlei which stretches along the eastern border and comprises of roughly 35 hectares with an average depth of 2.4 m. In August 2008, the City of Cape Town funded R3-million to restore Princess Vlei and its surrounding wetlands over a period of 3 years. The restoration included clearing alien vegetation, planting indigenous fynbos and building pathways, recreational areas, bomas and bird-watching hides. The Princess Vlei project was a partnership between the City of Cape Town, the SA National Bidodiversity Institute, Working for Wetlands and the non-government conservation group Biowatch.
