Polokwane

Polokwane, once known as Pietersburg, is the capital city of South Africa's Limpopo Province. The city is served by its own airport, Gateway International Airport, situated just a few kilometers to the north of the city. Polokwane is situated on the N1, the main highway between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The original town was named after the well-known General Petrus Jacobus (Piet) Joubert. The climate here is condusive to outdoor living, and the quality of life here is second to none.

The city's Hugh Exton Photographic Museum has a unique collection of some 23000 glass slides, which give a comprehensive picture of the city's history. Outside Polokwane is the Pietersburg Game Reserve, a 3200-hectare reserve housing more than 23 species of game - overnight facilities are available here on the Rhino Hiking Trail. There is a recreational area and caravan park that borders the reserve. More than 280 different species of birds have been identified in the Pietersberg Bird Sanctuary situated on the R521 road just outside the city.
