Cape Town Stadium - Green Point, Cape Town

In 2007 the original 18 000 seater Greenpoint Stadium was demolished to make way for the new stadium which played host to some of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. During construction, Cape Town Stadium was unofficially known as Green Point Stadium. During October 2009, the city asked for the public to propose names for the new stadium and the name Cape Town Stadium was chosen. The Stadium, which has become one of Cape Towns most iconic landmarks, was opened to the public in 2010 and hosted eight matches during the 2010 FIFA World CupT. At this time the stadium had a seating capacity of 64,100, but following the World Cup, the stadium capacity was reduced to 55,000, enabling it to cater for all types of sports.

The stadium regularly hosts Sport matches, Music concerts, Tours and Functions. Football stars such as Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Fernando Torres have been hosted at the stadium as well as music legends U2, the Eagles, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Lady Gaga and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you are observant you would also have noticed that the stadium has been featured in a number of television commercials as well has the blockbuster movie Safe House, which stars Denzil Washington and Ryan Reynolds.

The stadium cost around R4.5 billion to build and over 2 500 workers were employed during the course of the project, with some 1 200 artisans being trained in the process. Cape Town Stadium is managed by the City of Cape Towns Tourism, Events, Marketing and Strategic Assets Directorate.

A sophisticated network of passageways, stairs and lifts surround the stadium bowl and lead to an array of spectacular private function rooms that could be configured to suit the needs of any client whether they are looking for a venue to confer, socialise, promote or even get married in. Venues are sea, mountain or pitch facing and allow event organisers the versatility to create functions that only dreams are made of.

Green Point Park is a 12.5 hectare space owned by the City of Cape Town, which lies adjacent to the Stadium and is one of its Green Goal legacy projects launched in 2011. The park features walkways, green areas, seating, water features and ponds. The park includes Picnic spaces, walking and cycling paths, an outdoor exercise gym, the Adventure Play Park (for children aged 7-16 years) the Tot-Lot Play Park (for children aged 1-6 years) and lots more.
